Tteokbokki Spicy Rice Cake

Tteokbokki is a popular street food in Korea. This is a very spicy dish based on Garaetteok rice cake, seaweed and anchovy broth, spicy Kochujang paste and green onions.

Tteokbokki / Ddeokbokki / Dukbokki (떡볶이) there are several recipes. We will prepare a spicy version. You can also cook without hot pepper paste:

– with soy sauce

– with cream

– Rabokki is ramen and Tteokbokki.

How to cook Tteokbokki?

Let’s go back to our recipe, it’s classic. The basis of the broth is water, dried anchovies and Wakame seaweed. Cook the broth for 15 minutes and remove the anchovies and seaweed. They will not be needed anymore, but they will give a taste to our dish.

Mix the spicy paste with sugar and pepper flakes. This is the spicy part for the dish.

Add rice cake (Garaetteok) to the broth. This is a traditional Korean rice cake of cylindrical shape. Do not forget about green onions.

Ingredients:

Chicken egg — 2 pieces
Cayenne pepper flakes — ½ teaspoon
Sugar — 1 tablespoon
Spicy Kochujang paste — 1 tablespoon
Water — 500 ml
Anchovy carcasses — 5 pieces
Wakame seaweed — 1 tablespoon
Green onion — 2 stalks
Garaetteok — 200 grams

Directions:

1. Boil the eggs. Peel off the shell.
2. Mix cayenne pepper flakes, sugar, Kochujang paste.
3. Pour 500 ml of water into the pan. Set the medium fire.
4. Add anchovy carcasses and Wakame seaweed to the pan. Bring to a boil and cook for 15 minutes.
5. Remove the anchovy carcasses and algae from the pan. Leave the water.
6. Cut the green onion crosswise into slices 3 inches (8 cm) long.
7. Add garaetteok, eggs, green onions to the pan with the broth. Cook for 25 minutes. Stir regularly.
Serving: Serve hot. Carefully, the dish is very spicy.
